Also, you should have in mind that due to reciprocity, UK citizens pay 314 CNY (strictly cashless) compared to majority of others 168 CNY. Just not to confuse you...
I suggest you to take a morning ferry from Hong Kong downtown and to apply for a visa at Shekou port visa office. The congestion at visa office in Shekou is drastically relaxed compared to overland border crossings.0
