About:China Family Reunion Visa

Are there restrictions on where you can apply from?

Hi,

I may need to apply for a Q1 visa. I've been living and working in China for more than a decade, and I'm married to a Chinese woman. Unfortunately, I'm currently between jobs, and, if I'm not able to find a new job quickly, I may need to get a Q1 visa as a way to buy more time to look for a new job. We have been able to get information about the documentation needed (similar to what you describe in the article here), and the local Exit & Entry Administration Bureau has confirmed that I need to apply for the Q1 visa from outside of China, but they haven't been able to provide any more details about doing that, which is rather frustrating... Can I apply from HK or a nearby SE Asian country -- e.g., South Korea, Taiwan or Vietnam -- anywhere with a Chinese embassy? Or, do I need to go back to my home country (the U.S.) to apply? I've seen old information that seems to indicate that it needs to be my home country, but I've seen more recent things that seem to indicate it could be any country, or possibly even Hong Kong. Do you know?

You can apply in HK but South Korea, Taiwan or other countries won't work as you are not long-term resident there.

You can obtain a Chinese Q1 Visa from within China from large city Entry/Exit Administration Bureaus. I went to the smaller city of Weihai and they told me I had to do it from the US. Then we contacted the Entry/Exit Bureau in Anshan where my wife is originally from and they told us in no uncertain terms it can be done there. I also have a friend that got his Q1 in country in the large city of Nanning. You can also do it in the US, but if you already have permission to be in China, it might be best to do it there at the source. I am transitioning from an L1 Tourist Visa. Good luck!
