About:Visa on Arrival

Shenzhen Visa at land border crossing w/ HK - US Passport

I am a US passport holder and will be staying in HK. Am I able to apply for a Visa on Arrival or the 5 day Shenzhen visa when I cross the border between HK and Shenzhen? I will be visiting Shenzhen for the day and returning to my hotel in HK the same day. Route is HK-Shenzhen-HK.

Yes, you are allowed to do that. You are advised to use Luohu (Lo Wu) border crossing and have in mind that visa office is open just until 16:30. After your stay in Shenzhen you can return by any mean of transport and by taking any border crossing, including a high speed train.

However, I have to inform you that the price of this visa for US citizens is quite a steep 956 CNY. Also, all those who approach the border crossing have to bring a negative PCR/antigen test not older than 48 hours.

Are you sure about the PCR test? According to my research:

For persons travelling from Hong Kong to the Mainland (except those aged 3 and below), if they have stayed in Taiwan or overseas places on the day of departing Hong Kong for the Mainland or during the seven days before that day, they will still be required to conduct a nucleic acid test within 48 hours prior to departure (or, if the Guide on Epidemic Prevention and Control Measures for Travellers published by the Chinese Diplomatic and Consular Missions in the relevant places otherwise instructs, rapid antigen test may be conducted as an alternative) and obtain a negative result as per the Mainland’s requirements.

So if you’ve only been in HK prior to visiting the mainland, it shouldn’t be needed.
