About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

240 hour visa free entry with transit in another country

I am a British passport holder and will be visiting India in the summer. From India I will take a flight via Bangkok (changing planes not coming out of the airport) to Shanghai on the 14th of July. I will travel internally to Guilin and then to Beijing. On the 24th of July I will leave Beijing and go to Bangkok for one night. After that I will return to India from Thailand.

I am confused if this will count as going from India - China - Thailand or because I have stopped in Thailand it will count as going from and returning to Thailand, making me ineligible for visa free entry. Please can you clarify?

Bani, it counts your immediate points before and after Mainland China. Even if you don’t leave the airport, Bangkok is included in your itinerary. In this case, your route will be Bangkok – Shanghai – Guilin – Beijing – Bangkok, a round trip between Thailand and Mainland China which is not eligible for the 240h visa free transit.

Mez, unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. The basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, your immediate points are both in one country - Thailand, so this is considered as a round trip and not as a transit. I hope you can alter/modify your itinerary to be aligned with this basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit. I apologize for bringing you these unfavorable news.
