About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Questions about 240 hours transit visa

We're flying from United States, planning to stay in Taiwan for 10 days before heading to Vietnam (USA->Taiwan-> Vietnam)

I'm planning to buy a separate ticket from Taipei to Beijing (via Hongkong), and then from Nanjing back to Taipei (via Shanghai) . I entered China via Hongkong and then leave China for Taiwan. Am I eligible for the 240 hours transit visa. Thank you!

Question 2: If I purchase an international exit flight ticket out of China that has domestic layovers (specifically: Nanjing ➔ Taiyuan ➔ Shanghai ➔ Taipei on a single airline ticket), will this violate the transit policy and cause me to be denied boarding at the airport? Or must my international exit flight be a 100% non-stop direct flight from my final Chinese city to Taipei?

Your itinerary is definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you are allowed to cross the mainland Chinese provincial borders or to have flight with several stops within the mainland China. Your entire itinerary and your flight ticket are fine and you can proceed with your travel plan without any hesitation. In reality when you travel from Nanjing to Shanghai via Taiyuan you will exit mainland China in Shanghai. The segment between Nanjing to Shanghai will be a purely a domestic one. The exit formalities will be performed in Shanghai. This is all fine and in line with the existing rules.

In the end I would like to stress the importance of using a correct terminology because this is not 240 hours transit visa, but 240 hour visa free transit, so this is not a visa or better to say, there is no visa involved of any kind. Have a nice visit to China.
