UK > China > Taiwan > China > UK

Do you think I can do

UK > Chengdu (22 hrs) > Taiwan > Shanghai (3 days) > Chengdu (15 hrs) > UK
under the 240 hrs visa-free transit?

Of course, you can. There is nothing problematic or doubtful in your itinerary. The only detail worth mentioning is the fact that during your first segment your transit time in China will be 22 hours long and consequently you will be eligible for 24 and not for 240 hour visa free transit. Your second segment will come under 240 hour visa free transit rule because it is longer than 24 hours. This does not change anything, but just for your information and to encourage you to use correct terminology. In both segments you will travel absolutely visa free and that is the most important detail of all. Have a nice journeys.
