Martha, your entire itinerary is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit - twice and you do not need a visa of any kind. It would be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit as well if your stay in Beijing was longer than 24 hours.
If your tickets are bought as a single booking and your layover in Beijing is short (under 6 - 7 hours) you will not leave the transit zone (airside) of Beijing airport. In such a case you will just walk from one to the other gate and you will not be a subject of immigration and customs inspections. In case if your layover is longer than 7 hours, you can all apply for a temporary entry permit upon your landing in Beijing in order to be allowed to exit the airport and to make a short visit to the city. In such a case you will do the following:
1. Upon landing in Beijing you will fill out arrival card or even before your departure, you can fill it out through the official website for free: https://s.nia.gov.cn/ArrivalCardFillingPC/entry-registation-home
2. Perform fingerprinting at automatic fingerprinting machine
3. Approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight tickets and the proof of your accommodation if you plan to stay overnight in the hotel (it is advisable to have them as a printout or at least as a screenshot in your smartphone). This is all free of charge
4. When you have received your temporary entry permit in your passport you will head to the immigration and finally to the city to enjoy your time on your own
Have a wonderful journey.
