Chinese Visa from Taiwan

I'm a US citizen but I'm staying in Taiwan rn doing a mandarin learning program (on a visa) and I want to visit Chengdu when my semester ends since the flights would be cheaper. Is it possible to apply for a Chinese visa from Taiwan as a US citizen? Should I just go to Hong Kong and apply there?
