Swornima, if your entire transit time, counting from your first scheduled landing in mainland China, in your case in Beijing until your final scheduled departure from mainland China, in your case from Chengdu Tianfu airport is shorter than 24 hours, your itinerary will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. The same thing is valid for your return journey.
So, when you land in the first airport in mainland China, in your case in Beijing, the first thing you will do is to approach 24/144 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit because your next flight is a domestic one and you need to formally enter China. This application is free of any charge and here you will present your flight tickets and your accommodation booking confirmation if it happens that your layover in Beijing or Chengdu is during the night. You will do the same thing during your return journey, but you will then apply for that permit at Chengdu Tianfu airport.
So, if your total transit time, as explained is shorter than 24 hours, you can proceed absolutely visa free. One detail here. I can see that you have a change of airports in Chengdu. This is fine and acceptable, but you should understand that they are not exactly close to each other and you should inform yourself if the airlines will transfer your luggage or it will be up to you to do that. In any case, now you have, hopefully, enough information and you can proceed with your travel plans.
