About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

USA Citizen taking cruise from Shanghai. Does 144hr apply?

USA Citizen
Flying from USA to Shanghai (non-stop)
Taking Cruise from Shanghai to Japan (next day) 5 day cruise
Return on Cruise ship to Shanghai
Flying from Shanghai to USA (non-stop) same day

Does this qualify for 2 - 144hr visas?
