Question

Would any of these visa free transit be an option for us?  We are getting on a cruise in Hong Kong and sailing to Shanghai for two days overnight stay and then our next port is Kagoshima, Japan.  Would we be able to use any of these visa options?  Thanks.

Yes, of course. If your itinerary is:Hong Kong - Shanghai - KagoshimaAnd you do not have any mainland China port call immediately before and after Shanghai, you will be perfectly eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. It is fine to have a port call in Taiwan, by the way.
