Gareth, you did not mention your citizenship and that is very important/essential. Based on your name I will conclude that you are UK, US or Canada citizen. Your option number 1 is eligible, but booth of us know that there is no a direct/nonstop flight from Kuala Lumpur to Shenyang. It is however fine to take a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing by train to Shenyang and then to fly from Shenyang to Singapore or to take a train again to Beijing and a flight to Singapore. It is essential that your immediate points before and after mainland China are in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). Your option number 2 is not eligible because the immediate points are both in one territory - Hong Kong. You can really use Hong Kong, but it cannot be used within the itinerary where it is an immediate point before and after. It can be used in the itinerary: Kuala Lumpur - Hong Kong - Beijing (or Shenyang) - Kuala Lumpur or as an exit point, but in that case you cannot use it as an entry point into mainland China. So, keep in mind, the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories. It is fine to travel by train or plane within mainland China. Hope this helps.
