Going back from Shenzhen to HK can take take fast train instead of the ferry?

Hi, many thanks for your info. I was about to go to Shenzhen this Friday with the ferry to Shekou, departing from Hong Kong Macau ferry terminal instead of HK airport. I heard that this way is suggested, and that the ferry from HK is for transit when u got a flight? Can you advise us? And when going back to HK we can take the fast train instead of the ferry, is that correct? Since we don’t need the visa anymore.

Indeed, taking the first morning ferry, departing at 09:00 is really the best option to avoid heavy congestion at overland border crossing visa offices. Like this, you will obtain your VOA at Shekou. This service is provided by CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport. Also, the route Hong Kong (Macau Ferry Terminal) to Shekou has nothing to do with HK airport and the flights. There is also a service to and from HK airport to Shekou and this route is really dedicated to plane passengers only, but again, it does not have any relation with this route (line) that is of your interest.

You can return from Shenzhen back to Hong Kong by any transport mean you like and by taking any border crossing. The exit is much easier part since you can use high speed train too.

Thank you! What about taking the early train also at 9 am, will it be also avoiding the heavy congestion? And do you know the address of the departing ferry in HK going to Shekou and where do I buy my tickets? Many thanks!

It is suggested to depart earlier as the earliest ferry departing from Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal at 9:00. The terminal is located in Shun Tak Centre, Sheung Wan. You can book tickets on line or at the spot.

If you are talking about a direct, high speed train from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, then I have to inform you that this is not possible as there is no visa office. You can return to Hong Kong by high speed train, but you cannot use it in direction to Shenzhen.

You can take a local train until the border (at Lo Wu - Luohu crossing) and try your luck there, but I am honestly suggesting you not to try that because the queues are already formed even before 09:00. This is the reason why I am suggesting you to take a ferry.

Ok clear, thank you. If we arrive at Shekou port, will it be clearly visible where to register for the VOA? And how long does the ferry ride take? We could not find the tickets online, will there be enough tickets at the spot to buy this morning at 9 am?

Yes, you will easily find VOA office upon arrival in Shekou. The ferry ride takes about 60 minutes. You can easily find tickets online by accessing CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport Company website. It is hard to say if there will be available tickets to buy them on the day, although I am quite certain that this will be the case... Anyway, I suggest buying a ticket in advance, online for the peace of mind.
