About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

taiwan to Shanghai (cruise 12 day) shanghai to usa

I will be traveling from Taiwan to Shanghai and doing a 12 day cruise to Japan and then flying out of Shanghai back to the USA. Do I qualify for the 144 hour visa?

Taiwan -Shanghai - Japan - Shanghai - USA is fine for the 144h twov on both ways as long as you don't have another stop in China.
When your transit time in Shanghai is under 24 hours, you're fine for the 24h twov.

And keep in mind, it's not a 144h visa, that doesn't exist.
It's a visa free transit.
