If Kunming is your only stop within mainland China and obviously it is, you are definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa.
You will print out your flight tickets and have those printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in Hong Kong that you will travel to Kathmandu via Kunming using 24 hour visa free transit. After a short inspection of your flight tickets, you will be allowed to board the plane. Here, at check-in in Hong Kong, you will inform yourself about a luggage policy. I assume, especially if you are traveling on a single (through) tickets by China Eastern that your luggage will be tagged all the way to Kathmandu, but you should ask, just for a case.
Upon your arrival in Kunming, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport. You are advised to book, at least, some simple accommodation before your departure and to have a printouts of your accommodation booking with you. The reason is simple. Chinese immigration authorities are demanding some king of proof that you will have an accommodation in the city if you are asking to be allowed to exit the airport. So, havin a proof that you really have an accommodation could greatly help you to be granted a permit. In reality and you have to be aware of the fact that the issuing of the temporary entry permit always depends on immigration authorities discretion.
Of course, if you want to be 100% certain that you will be allowed to exit the airport in Kunming, you will apply for a transit (G) visa in advance.
