As already answered below to your question, I will just repeat:
You cannot cross the border between mainland China and Macau on foot when traveling on 144 hour visa free transit. You can only take a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou to Macau, but you have to book that ticket in advance and to print out the e-confirmation that you will receive after your booking.
Also, it is also possible to take a plane from Jieyang Chaoshan (sometimes called Shantou) airport to Macau. This plane option and the ferry are two only possibilities to travel to Macau when traveling on 144 hour visa free transit.
By the way, to be allowed to travel to Macau, you need to declare that in the country from where you will depart to Guangzhou. So, you will declare that your itinerary will be:
X country - Guangzhou - Macau
You will have to book a ferry ticket through TurboJet ferry website and have a printout of an e-confirmation received after you have booked a ferry. Please, keep in mind that you will have to take exactly that ferry you have bought your ticket for.
