Thanks for your response Zupan.

I have requested an accommodation through the airlines I am flying with, I am hoping to get an approval for the same sometime this week.

With regards to the Temporary Entry Permit to exit the airport, is this something that I can apply for in the US via the Chinese Embassy or is this something that can only be done after I land in Beijing? Also, the "24-hour visa-free transit" that you asked me to visit for the "Temporary Entry Permit" is this a counter at the airport or would this be something that I would have to apply/request for at the Immigration Office in the airport?

Once again, I appreciate you taking out time for helping me and my family out.

First of all and the most important is that your itinerary is eligible for 24 hour visa free transit.

The second thing is a temporary entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport. To obtain this permit, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit and apply for the mentioned permit. Your chances to be granted one are good and especially if your layover is during the night hours. If I'm right about this detail, you are advised to book your accommodation in advance and to bring an accommodation confirmation (a printout) to empower your application for a permit. Anyway, you should be aware that the issuing of temporary entry permit always depends on sovereign discretion of immigration authorities on a day of your arrival.

Having an accommodation done through the airlines is always a good thing and it will greatly improve your chances to be granted a temporary entry permit upon your arrival in Beijing.

A temporary entry permit is a permit that you will receive or not when you travel on 24 hours visa free transit. In other words, practically everyone who is not unacceptable for Chinese authorities for some reason is allowed to travel on 24 hours visa free transit, but the issuing of a temporary entry permit is another thing. This is a permit that allows a traveler to exit the airport and to enjoy his/her time in the Chinese city as he/her wishes. Two different things, but you cannot get a permit without traveling on 24 hours visa free transit.

You can only apply for this permit upon your landing in Beijing. There is no other way. This application is free of charge and also the permit when you obtain it. To be granted a temporary entry permit, you will literally approach the counter with the sign: 24 hour visa free transit. You will just look for one upon your landing and you will not miss it since it is very well signposted. In any case, you will freely ask a ground airport staff to tell you where this counter is. It can be close to the immigration, but it can be somewhat different from one to the other airport. Also, you will usually see the queue of people waiting for the same permit in front of this counter.

Just be relaxed, now you are prepared and you will be successful, of course.
