Part one:
Daisy, you are right.
Your friend will have to decide how many days will he stay within Guandong province because 144 hour visa free transit allows him to travel throughout the entire province that is a bit more than 1/4 the area of France. He has to keep in mind two important details:
1. Beside Shenzhen, he is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China or in other words, he has to arrive to Shenzhen by direct flight from a country different than mainland China.
2. He has to stay within Guangdong province for at least 24 hours and 1 minute, counting from his scheduled arrival by plane, until his scheduled departure by ferry from Shenzhen Shekou ferry port. The reason is simple... Only the stay that is longer than 24 hour is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.
So, when he decides how many days will he spend in Guangdong province, he will visit CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport company website where he will book a ticket for Hong Kong Macau Ferry terminal. He will receive an e-confirmation that he will print out and bring with him. This will be a proof that he will be in real transit. Also, he will declare at check-in in the country that precedes Shenzhen that he will travel to Hong Kong via Shenzhen using 144 hour visa free transit. Exactly like this.
