About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US - Shanghai - Taiwan - Shanghai - US

Hello,

I am a U.S. citizen, planning to travel from US to Shanghai, immediate layover to flight to Taiwan (stay for 6 days), then return from Taiwan to Shanghai then stay for 4 days, then fly back to US. Would I qualify for the 144-hour visa free? Or do I need to get a one time entry due to entering Shanghai once from Taiwan?

Your itinerary is definitely eligible for visa free transit in Shanghai twice. You first stop in Shanghai will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit and during your second stop you will enjoy 144 hour visa free transit. There is nothing special about Taiwan when we talk about visa free transit rules. It is considered as a third country for those purposes.
