Thanks for your wonderful reply. . They have a 144 hour transit policy if you are travelling to a 3rd city onwards on Air China. . I think i will try a free transit visa as I have a tentative city tour program of which i will get a copy. . So i will gamble, if i get it , fine otherwise will stay at Airport. For few hours , i don't think , I should get a proper visa when i am not sure whether i would come here in near future. .
I will count on my luck that day with the hope that immigration officer i get on that day didn't had a fight with his wife.😀

Part one:

Ashfaq, you have two options to enjoy 5 hours or more of Beijing during your layover in the city:

1. One is called 24 hour free entry permit. This permit does not belong to passengers' rights and is considered as a kind of privilege granted to the applicants upon their landing in a Chinese city and decision whether it will be granted or not, depends entirely on discretion of Chinese immigration authorities. In other words, you can apply for this permit upon your landing in Beijing and you can hope that the mentioned entry permit will be granted to you. The authorities in Beijing are a bit more relaxed that in the other airports, but you really never know. It is a kind of roulette, especially if your layover is during the daylight hours. People wishing to exit the airport during the daylight hours, usually book in advance some simple city tour and present this fact to the authorities by showing them a confirmation in hard copy. So, this would be by far the easiest way to exit the airport, but nobody can give you a guarantee that your permit will be granted.

2. You can obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa if you are a US citizen because this is very useful investment because US citizens are eligible for 10 year multiple entry Chinese visa. In case if you are a Pakistani citizen, you can obtain a Chinese transit (G) visa in advance to be certain that you will be allowed to exit the airport. Having a Chinese visa, L or G is the only way that will secure you an exit from the airport for certain.

Part two:

By the way, if you are traveling on separate tickets and you will have to collect your luggage in Beijing and also perform new check-in, then an entry permit is granted for certain because without it it would be impossible to perform the mentioned operations. Anyway, I assume that you are flying on a single (through) ticket, so you will have to make a decision whether you will decide to play a roulette with the issuing of entry permit upon arrival or you will apply for a relevant visa while you are in US.
