The main question here is whether you are flying on a single (through) or on a separate tickets?

If the first situation is the case, you will probably not be allowed to leave the airport because to be allowed to exit the airport, you are supposed to apply for 24 hour free entry permit and it is granted usually for the layovers longer than 8 hours.

If the second situation is the case (separate tickets), you will be definitely granted an entry permit because you will have to exit the sterile zone to collect your luggage and to make new check-in for your flight to Cebu. In this case, if some reasonable time remains after the accomplished formalities, you are allowed to take a metro or even maglev to the city. In reality, Shanghai Pudong airport is quite time consuming and you will see that not much time will be left at your disposal for reasonable movements outside the airport complex.

US citizens can apply for a Chinese tourist (L) visa in the Philippines in Chinese Manila embassy or in their Cebu general consulate. They will grant you a visa. This is not a difficult process, but the fact is that the best solution for US citizens is to obtain a Chinese visa in the US because by applying in US they are eligible for 10 years multiple entry visa and in most other countries they can usually get a single or double entry visa with short validity for the same price as it would be a 10 year visa obtained in US.

Indeed, if you intend to travel often, especially to Asia, you will encounter in so many searches for affordable tickets, those taking you through China. Having this detail in mind it is definitely the best option to obtain a 10 year multiple entry visa, so that you don't have to bother yourself with these visa free transit details.

As far as the good restaurants within Pudong airport are concerned, the news are not exactly the best because the offer is quite limited to just several relatively good offers. For example, if your itinerary will bring you to Terminal 1, you can look after Tai Hing, Tsui Wah and Sunrise Restaurant. If it happen that you will use Terminal 2, then you best bet are Tian Xia Dumplings and Ajisen Ramen. I assume that you are flying on China Eastern, so you will probably use Terminal 1. Anyway, if you exit the terminal, you will encounter the food court located at the transportation interchange station of Terminal 1 and 2 where a very good restaurant Haoxi Liantai is located. It is used by airport staff quite often.

Unfortunately, there is no sushi offered at the mentioned restaurants, but mostly Chinese style meals and in some of the places the food is a blend of Chinese and Western styles. In my opinion, I prefer beef noodles. You will find something that will suit your taste, definitely :)

To be realistic, your exploration for really good food that China offers will begin after you enter the cities and smaller towns, the less touristy, the better. This will be a genuine experience. The food at the airport can be good or satisfactory, but it is just aimed at the crowd that passes by and want to eat something in relatively short time.

Ya know what I think it must be the same all over the world then as here in the USA its the same way,If you want really good food you have to get out of the Airport and go find a nice local spot run by a local family for many years.I am going to try and get a Visa I think ,I looked at the prices and why is it so much more expensive for an american Visa than anyone else is charged and its not just a few dollars its substantial,I do not mind paying because your country is very beautiful and has so much history and culture to learn about,I love historical things,So I hope when I come I can get a visa for a long stay ,I find when I travel some where if I stay a long time ,I learn so much more about how things really are in a country than what may be portrayed by our Govt or others,I Went to Australia twice for 3 months each time and learned a great deal about that country and its people,Thats why I am going to the Philippines for an extended stay ,I find they are very good respectable people and enjoy talking with them very much,Now I want to see there country and learn about there daily life there also,Thank you so very much for your kindness and answers helping me ,Jim Persinger
