About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

does Layover flight count toward 10 days visa free

If I fly from US to Shanghai with a short 3 hour layover in Seoul, and then leave from Shanghai directly to US, Would this qualify for 10 days visa free

JFK - ICN - PVG, then PVG - JFK

Yes, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Your short layover is the detail that made your entire itinerary as eligible one. As far as you know, the 240 hour visa free transit scheme requires that the immediate (the accent is on - immediate) points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). In other words, in the eyes of the Chinese immigration authorities all that matters is the segment "Seoul (South Korea) - mainland China - US", regardless of the length of your layover in South Korea. The length and the nature of your stay, layover, transit, whatever in Seoul is irrelevant detail. Have a nice visit to China.
