US Citizen Transit Visa

Hello,
We are US citizens looking to travel to Beijing for 2 days (take a train to Chengdhu) and stay in Chengdu for 2 days. Then leave for Japan. We’ll be in China from 10/26 - 10/30. Do we need a travel visa for China? I heard that since I’m leaving China from a different city I don’t qualify for visa-free?
