About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Visa free travel

Would this qualify for Visa-Free Transit as a US citizen: US to Taipei to Hong Kong to Macau (day trip) to Shenzhen to Hong Kong to Tokyo? I want to visit Shenzhen for one night but need to fly to Tokyo from Hong Kong. Also, does it matter how little I’m in Macau? It’s purely to enter from a different country for the rule to apply. Thanks

You obviously plan to travel:

US - Hong Kong - Shenzhen (mainland China) - Macau - Hong Kong - Tokyo

If this is the case, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. My recommendation for you is to take a train from Hong Kong West Kowloon station to Futian station in Shenzhen. As far as your exit from Shenzhen to Macau is concerned, you will have to buy your Shekou (a port in Shenzhen) to Macau ferry ticket while still in Taiwan or Hong Kong. You will have to enter mainland China with a ticket at hand that will guarantee that you will exit toward the third country/eligible territory.

It really does not matter how long (short) you will stay in Macau and your use of Macau is a very creative and acceptable way to travel. Have a nice visit to China.

Hello, if I decided to fly from Taipei to Macau and then take a ferry to Shenzhen, what is the process through the airport in Macau and then at the ferry? Thank you for your response in advanced!

It is all very straightforward. When your flight lands in Macau you will just enter the territory and here you do not have to perform anything special. You are entering Macau absolutely visa free. When you enter Macau you will head to Macau port (this is so called Outer Harbour) to take the ferry to Shenzhen. You will perform check-in and when you reach Macau exit immigration you will present your passport and your Shenzhen to Hong Kong West Kowloon train ticket that you have already bought in advance. Also, you will declare that you are traveling to Shenzhen (mainland China) in order to use 240 hour visa free transit during your stay in Shenzhen (mainland China). They will check your train ticket and you will board the ferry for Shenzhen. I hope this helps.
