About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Restriction on number of Visas?

We are travelling UK>Guangzhou>Bali and then Bali>Guangzhou>UK nine days later. Would we be eligible for the visa both times?
We have a 9 hour layover on the way to Bali so would be great to stretch our legs and get some food. On the way back from Bali we have 19 hours so would be good to get a hotel and good nights sleep before the second flight. Hoping there’s no restriction on this!

This is not a visa so whether you can enter the country depends solely on the immigration rule of the day (yes, they do change them frequently without anybody knowing what they actually are in the first place). Therefore, when not holding a visa and staying under 24 hours, you are at the mercy of immigration.

Here we have to separate circumstances.

The first one tells that you are definitely eligible for 24 hours visa free transit in both of your transits via Guangzhou.

The second one is 24 hours free entry permit that is granted, upon discretion of immigration authorities to those who have long(er) layovers. So, you will apply, upon your arrival in Guangzhou for 24 hours free entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport. The permits are usually granted to those who have a layover longer than 8 hours and especially to those having a layover during the night. So, having an accommodation booking confirmation in hard copy is good detail to help you obtain a permit. There is no limit on number of entry permits that can be enjoyed.

Please, just try to use correct terminology because you will not need any kind of visa during your transit in China.
