About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transit visa at Guanzhou airport

Hi, I am Zuhaib from India, doing my PhD in New Zealand. I am attending a conference at Germany in August and I have a transit of 18 hours at Guangzhou airport. Given 18 h is long time I would like to have some sight seeing of the city. Do I need a visa for getting outside the airport and do I need to apply for it here in New Zealand or can I get it from the airport itself in China. How much will it cost me and how long does it usually takes them to get one.
Cheers

If your entire transit time within China is 18 hours, you are perfectly covered by 24 hours visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. As far as your exit from the airport is concerned, this is another and different detail because the travel on 24 hours visa free transit doesn't automatically grants entry permit to China. In order to be allowed to exit the airport, you will apply upon landing in Guangzhou for 24 hours free entry permit. You will present your onward flight ticket and also your accommodation booking in hard copy. Accommodation bookings are always the best catalyst in the eyes of Chinese immigration officials and it can be something really basic. I would say that your chances to be granted an entry permit, especially because of the length of your layover are very good, but you should also know that the issuing of this permit is always upon discretion of immigration official. Of course, if you want to be certain that you will be definitely allowed to exit the airport, you can apply for transit visa before your flight to Germany, but in my opinion it is too costly and probably unnecessary investment for such a short time that you can spend in Guangzhou.
