I am flying from San Franciso to Shanghai with a brief stop in Hong Kong to change planes.

When changing planes do I need to go thru customs in HK or in Shanghai? If I need to go thru customs in HK how much time do I need since HK is the 4th busiest airline in the world in order to make a connecting flight ? Thank you for your response.
