Your itinerary is eligible for 240 hour visa free transit without any doubt and you do not need any kind of visa. I just wanted to inform you that the entry formalities in China are always performed at the first landing point as it is in US as well. This is all fine because you have a layover long enough to accomplish all the formalities: fill out arrival card, perform fingerprinting, approach 24/240 hour visa free transit and cross the immigration because your flight to Beijing will be a domestic one. You should just inform at Delta Air Lines whether your luggage will be tagged all the way to Beijing (hopefully) or you will have to collect and re-check your luggage in Shanghai. Have a nice visit to China.
