About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I will be in China for 10 days and flying to India

I am flying from Chicago, USA to Beijing, China, arriving on September 14, 2025. I will be leaving Shanghai, China, on September 23, 2025, flying to Mumbai, India. I will be flying from Mumbai, India, to Chicago, USA on October 1, 2025. I will be in China for less than 240 hours. Can I apply for 240 hours transit visa?

Well, here we have several not well presented details. The first one is that there are no direct flights between Chicago and Beijing and second, there are no direct flights between Shanghai to Mumbai. It is extremely important to present your real and complete flight itinerary in order to determine its eligibility. It is essential to understand that only the immediate points before and after China matter and those immediate points have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). So, you can fly Chicago - Seoul - Beijing - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Mumbai, but you cannot fly Chicago - Hong Kong - Beijing - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Mumbai. Also, I encourage you to use correct terminology because it is not 240 hours transit visa, but 240 hour visa free transit, so there is no visa of any kind at all.
