About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Layover question

I'm looking at a flight where I'd be flying from FUK > ICN (staying for one day) then ICN > PVG (staying for approx 2 days) and finally PVG > FUK. For the last flight, I would have a layover at ICN. Would I qualify for the 72 hr free transit in Shanghai since I have a layover in South Korea after leaving Shanghai?

I should mention I have a US passport, but I'm resident of Japan (work visa).

You won't because Korea-China-Korea is not transit. Only one portion of your trip is allowed to have a stop in Korea, e.g., FUK-ICN-PVG-FUK or FUK-PVG-ICN-FUK.
