About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transiting through Ghaungzhou for 16hrs

My partner and i are transiting through Ghaungzhou for 16 hrs with New Zealand passports, going to Japan from Australia. The Brisbane Chinese consulate website isn't very helpful and didn't mention a 72hr free transit; do we need to pre-apply before getting to Ghaungzhou? Or just at the Guangzhou Baiyun airport on arrival?

It is not a visa and you'll get it as a part of immigration inspection process. However you'll encounter longer wait times at immigration if not holding a valid visa because you are not allowed to use the regular lanes.
