Actually, Hong Kong, although part of China is treated separately as far as 240 (has replaced old 144 hour visa free transit), so it is eligible as a third territory in this regard and you are qualified for both 24 and 240 hour visa free transit that is valid for mainland China and you do not need any kind of visa. In other words, if you fly, for example UK - Shanghai - Hong Kong you can stay within mainland China for up to 240 hours absolutely visa free. Also, you can just have a short layover in Shanghai and consequently use 24 hour visa free transit. The choice is all yours, but I just wanted you to know that Hong Kong acts as a third country in this regard and that 24 and 240 hour visa free transit schemes are valid in this case as if you travel to a real third country. Have a nice journey.
