About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

U.S.A > Shanghai 144 Visa Free

I am a U.S Citizen traveling from U.S.A to Shanghai. I plan to stay in Shanghai for 5 days and have an onward ticket to New Zealand. I plan to enter the country on the 144 hour free policy. Is there any paperwork I need to fill out upon arrival? What does it mean by "It is necessary to inform the carrier before you arrive, so that they can declare your request to the immigration office for processing."

Leah, if you travel like that, you will be eligible for the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. You need to fill out a form to apply for the 144 hour free transit after arriving at Shanghai airport.
It means that when you board the flight in USA, you need to inform the airlines that you want to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. In this way, the airlines can inform Shanghai airport immigration office about your request. After arrival, you can apply for free transit there.
