About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Third country rule

If I'm visiting Japan for a few days, have a separate ticket to Beijing, then have a ticket to the US with a layover in Tokyo on the way home, does this work for the 72 hour visa free transit. (Can I use the US as my third country or does my layover in Japan on the way mess it up?)

I'm afraid your layover in Japan will mess it up. You are not eligible for the Beijing 72-hour free transit I think.
