About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need Visa to Shanghai?

Hi there,
Please Help.
I am a Lithuanian Citizen, will be travelling from London to Bangkok, then Bangkok to Shanghai on 5th July 2016, arriving at 05:20 am, then leaving Shanghai to Taipei on 8th July at 08:20am.

Do I need to obtain an actual Chinese entry permit, as the staying period will be exceeding more than 72 hours ?

I have tried to contact Chinese embassy in London, they insist that 72 hours frame will be exceeded and then I asked about 144 hours policy, they replied to me they do not hold such information about it and can not comment anything on that, apart 72 hour policy.
I am Confused...
Please advice.
Regards
ED

Hi there! I don't know why the embassy told you that, but according to what I know, you are eligible for the 144-hour free transit policy. It's strange that the embassy knows nothing about it because the policy has already been implemented for a few months. What's more, you are actually eligible for the 72h free transit if the 144h one does not exist. The 72-hour period starts from the midnight following your arrival, so you don't exceed 72 hours. Don't worry, the actual visa is not required for you as long as you are sure that you don't stop in other Chinese cities.
