About:China Visa Exemption

Shanghai PVG Transit

I'm going to travel from Hong Kong via PVG to SFO, a 2 1/2 hour transit in PVG. I have US passport and no China visa. I was told airline only tag your baggage to PVG, then we need to carry our bag to check in again at departure area in order to get baggage tag from PVG to SFO. That means going through customs, applying temporary stay permit, check in, and security screening. Do I have enough time to catch my next flight?

Chris, your route is qualified for 72 hours free transit. So you do not need the temporary stay permit. Upon arrival, you just need the instructions to find the window where you can apply for the free transit. You just need to show your passport and onward air ticket and then you will get a stamp on your passport. With this stamp, you can even leave the airport.
