Termination of Z visa, do I need to do anything specific?

I have been working in China for 9 months but in a few months I have to head back home. For example, do I have to get a release letter from the embassy? I am not seeking employment else where in mainland at the moment but maybe in a few years I will.

If you have no plan to find an employer immediately, then I don't think you need to ask for the release letter.
