About:China Visa Exemption

US Military Member

I am traveling to the United States for holiday break. I am in the US military and do not currently have a passport. The ticket I am looking at will take me through Shanghai. I will not be traveling on a passport but I will have my military ID and have my leave orders with me at the time of travel. My layover will be approx. 3 hours. Will I need a passport to transit through China?

I'm afraid you still need the passport. You can confirm this with the immigration office in the city you transit.

I ended up getting a ticket straight to the United States. You definitely need a passport.
