US Passport apply entry visa to Shenzhen

Is it possible for a US passport holder planning a trip to Shenzhen, returning to Hong Kong, and then flying back to the US to apply for an entry visa through the Shenzhen Port? What is the procedure for this? Since it's just a day trip to Shenzhen and he cannot provide a hotel reservation in Shenzhen, would it still be possible to apply for the visa?

US citizen is definitely eligible to obtain a Shenzhen 5 day visa on arrival. She/he does not need any documents if she/he plans to apply for a Shenzhen VOA. She/he will arrive at the border crossing (Lo Wu / Luohu, if she/he plans to use MTR train or Huanggang if a car will be used) with her/his passport. Everything else will be done and processed at the Luohu or Huanggang border crossing visa office including photos taking. There is an affordable fee of 130 CNY that has to be paid by bank card (debit or credit and all major global cards are accepted). During the process of filling out a visa form she/he will just state that the intention to enter Shenzhen is a day trip without a hotel. After a stay in Shenzhen, she/he can return back to Hong Kong by taking any border crossing and any mean of transport, high speed train included. Hope this helps.
