I'm Australian citizen would like to know if I can live in China for long time

If you plan to stay long, then you might try to apply for long-term visas, such as Z for employment, S1 for visiting any foreign relatives who work or study in PRC and X1 for studying in PRC. They allow you to stay more than six months.
