Crossing china by train

Hello! I would like to go from myanmar to mongolia by train and thus crossing china. I am wondering if it possible to get into china without flying ticket (as i want to experience countryside train). Moreover, i am wondering what is meant by "invitation". Is it necessarly from a travel agency or it could only from one single hotel?
Thanks!

Theo, how long will you stay in mainland China? If it's not more than seven days, I suggest you applying for the G type transit permit. The train tickets can be used for the application.

The invitation letter can be issued by a travel agency or someone in China. If you can provide hotel reservations, the invitation letter is not required.

Theo, you don't need to buy plane tickets. The train ticket is acceptable.

Nice! Last question and I stop bothering all of you: as I am living in India, I have a residency proof. But I am wondering if I should apply here for the chinese visa or if I can apply in Myanmar (without residency proof in Myanmar)? Would it be risky to do so?

Theo, you can apply from India because your have residency proof. I would not suggest you applying from Myanmar. It's more difficult and risky if you apply from there.
