About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Meaning of Third Country

I notice that the wording of the conditions for the 72-hour visa-free transit states that the onward flight from China has to be to a third country or region, the first country being the traveller's home country and the second country China. Does that mean that the 72-hour visa-free transit cannot be used on the homeward journey (eg Japan - Shanghai - UK for a UK national), but only on the outward journey (UK - China - Japan)?

The third country means a country different from the one where you leave for China.
Since UK is a different country from Japan (the country you leave for Shanghai), you are able to enjoy the 72-hour free transit on your way back to UK.
