i am planning on taking a tour including hkshanghai.

Question

In other words, how far in advance should I apply?  And, I see there are two applications for HK and one for the mainland of China, is that correct?  I need two different ones?

For China mainland, it is suggested to apply around one month before your trip. If you have USA passport, you can enjoy a 90-day free entry to HK. So you do not need to apply it for HK. You need to apply one for China mainland.
