About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I travel from South Korea to Shanghai for two days then travel to US. enjoy 72-hour policy?

I have a US passport and
1) How do I go about obtaining my free transit permit? at the airport when I arrive?
2) By checking into a hotel, I should be OK from registering or do I still need to register at the nearest police station?

Thank you,

You need to tell your airline company that you want to enjoy this policy when boarding. Upon reaching the airport, you can use your valid passport, onward ticket to a third country to get a stay permit.

If you check in a hotel, the hotel will help you to register at local hotel and you do not need to worry about it.
