Less than 24 hours stay in Kunming Int'l Airport

Hi - From what I've read, as long as we stay less than 24 hours, we do not need a visa. What's not clear is if we can go out of the airport, visit few places, get a decent hotel to sleep to at night and finally back to the airport in time for our next flight to Dubai? Thanks in advance!
