About:China Customs Declaration

I'm travelling to china soon and looking to bring $700 USD worth of commercial samples from a supplier in China back to Australia

I understand these need to be declared on exit of China , is the paper work complicated or do any taxes need to be paid ?

Just for commercial samples, I heard no tax will be charged. But you'd better show the proof of the samples for declaration! If they are of any potential danger, show the security proof.
This is just for your reference. For more details, you'd better confirm with the immigration administration of an airport from where you will leave China.
