About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying from Taiwan to Beijing to Hong Kong

Would I qualify for the 72 hr transit if I purchased a ticket from Taiwan to Beijing but I have a layover in Hong Kong, then purchase a ticket from Beijing to Hong Kong? I'm afraid they would consider that I am coming and going to the same place even though my original country of departure is Taiwan due to the layover in Hong Kong before my arrival in Beijing.

That is true. You should apply for a Chinese visa for this visit if your flight stops in HK before landing at Beijing airport.
