About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

Traveling Tokyo-Shanghai-Hong Kong with a 23 hour layover in Shanghai.

We travel on U.S. passports and wish to leave airport to stay in a Shanghai hotel the one night. Is there no Visa required. Is there a chance they will not let us leave the airport? Is there a special counter we need to go to upon landing in Shanghai. I have confirmed tickets and hotel. Just a bit nervous!

Don't worry too much. When you land at the airport, you can follow leading signs to where you can apply for 72 hours free transit. It's actually a stamp on your passport. Aferwards, you can leave the airport with your stamped passport.

From what I have read so far, You must have a ticket for onward travel to another country and not be arriving AND DEPARTING to your own USA. I am also USA and noticed this restriction.
