Transit through Shanghai

I am stopping at Shanghai for a few hours en transit to Australia in January 2013, staying over night on our return trip 1- 2 March 2013. I understand a visa is not required as onward travel can be proven both ways. However, my passport expires in July 2013. This is acceptable by Australia but will it be ok for Shanghai?
