I am a British passport holder can I apply for a Chinese visa while on holiday in Australia

Yes, you can apply for it in Australia, but please provide valid Australian visa as well as entry record for application. If you are free of visa or with ETA and electronic visa, both the original and the copy of Australian entry record(stamp) are required.
